Memorization is not a favorite activity for many people. It takes time and concentration- both of which you may feel are used up in just daily living. However, there is power in memorizing Scripture, dear friend. The Word of God is powerful in your daily life. It was powerful in the early church. It’s powerful today in Spring, TX. It’s well worth your time and concentration.

Memorizing Scripture is Good for You

The Word of God is alive and active. It’s your sword and it’s sharper than any sword, cutting right to the heart. It is God-breathed and eternal, giving light and wisdom to those who seek Him. It’s His communication to us. To you. Read it. Meditate on it. Memorize and know it. Consider the following 5 benefits to Scripture memorization:

1) Know God better.

Imagine being separated from a loved one for a very long time. You miss every little thing about them- their voice, their smile, and every facial expression. You would do anything to keep knowing them, to maintain the relationship. Every email, text, or letter would mean everything to you. You might even reread some of them again and again. This is exactly what God has given us in His Word- letters so we can know Him. Memorizing Scripture helps internalize who He is.

2) Avoid temptation.

When Jesus was tempted by Satan, He responded by quoting Scripture. Knowing God’s Word gives you a powerful weapon against temptation. It keeps your mind centered on God. It strengthens your hearts in the pursuit of God. In the list of spiritual armor, it’s the only offensive item. It’s your sword. Don’t leave it sheathed on a bookshelf or in your pocket. Keep it in position for the fight.

3) Renew your mind.

We live in a constant state of information overload. The internet has made information more available than at any other time in the history of the world. What’s filling your mind? The way you think affects your emotions and the choices you make. Exposing your mind to Scripture repeatedly is a powerful tool in keeping it centered on the mind of Christ.

4) Enhance your prayer life.

1 John 5:14-15 says God hears us when we pray according to His will, and His answer is always yes. In the process of memorizing Scripture, the Word of God changes you. You become more like Christ. This has a tremendous impact on your prayer life. You will likely pray more. And, you will pray more and more according to His will. Scripture memorization with a heart to know God naturally lends itself to more and deeper conversations with Him. As you know or prove His will (Romans 12:1,2), you begin to pray with the heart of God. And if you’re praying His heart, you’re praying for the very things He already wants.

5) Encourage others.

Have you ever been talking to a friend, coworker, or family member about a difficult time in their life and wished you had some better way to encourage them? Those moments may still come, but the more you know Scripture, the better equipped you will be to talk to people in their time of need. To encourage fellow believers in their walk. To speak the gospel into the life of someone struggling to believe. The Word of God is powerful. It’s powerful for salvation and for daily living. Keep it at the tip of your tongue, at the tip of your heart. Scripture memorization equips you to minister to others when they need it the most. What better way to connect with other people!

A Word of Caution

Scripture memorization can be simply a mental activity. You can memorize Scripture just for knowledge in your head. While even that isn’t necessarily a bad thing altogether, if you’re memorizing verses in the Bible just for head knowledge, you’re missing out. Don’t just memorize words and references. Hide His Word in your heart and let it renew your mind. While you’re at it, discover the power of delighting yourself in the Lord. You won’t be disappointed.

The Word Came with Power

Memorizing Scripture may seem like a daunting task. Especially in light of everything you need to accomplish each day. But it’s ok to start small. It’s ok to memorize a little at a time. Take just 15 minutes a day to focus on memorizing verses that impact you. Keep your sword sharp and equipped. Taste and see the Lord is good!
