Humility can be difficult for us to master as Christians. In James 4:10, the Bible tells us to “humble ourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.” But how do we humble ourselves, and stay humble as Christians? Let’s dive deeper into this topic.
How do we stay humble as Christians?
There are multiple ways to keep humility in our lives, and some of them involve leaning on others and God for help. Some of it is a mindset change, like being grateful for what God gives you or keeping your pride in check. Finally, we recommend offering yourself grace as you learn to be humble the way God calls us to be.

1) Be Grateful For What God Gives You
One of the first things we can do to help grow our humbleness is to be grateful for what God blesses us with. Thankfulness is one of the key ways we can be humble about our lives. Maintaining a mindset of gratitude is present throughout the Bible in verses like 1 Chronicles 16:34, Hebrews 12:28, Psalm 118:24, and many more verses.
So how do we do this? One of the best ways is to make a habit of noticing all of the positive things in your life and giving thanks for those good things. Humble people are grateful for the gifts that are given to them, so that is a behavior we should try to emulate.
2) Accept Corrections Gracefully From Others
Another attribute humble people have is the ability to gracefully take constructive criticism. This is a hard thing to do, certainly. But accepting criticism is important to maintain relationships with our loved ones, and to become a humble person. We recently wrote a blog post about how to accept constructive criticism, so if you would like more information about that, go check it out.
3) Be Considerate Towards Others
Humble people are considerate towards others with their actions and words. Philippians 2:3-4 tells us to, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
Here we can see that humility and consideration go hand in hand. If we want to be humble, we need to be considerate, and vice versa. Humility is about putting others first instead of yourself.
4) Follow Jesus’ Teachings
Finally, we are meant to follow Jesus. He tells us to love the Lord your God with all our hearts, minds, and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. All of this requires us to be humble in our lives so we can show our love for others and God.
