Why You Should Read & Memorize Scripture

The Word of God is alive and active. It’s your sword and it’s sharper than any sword, cutting right to the heart. It is God-breathed and eternal, giving light and wisdom to those who seek Him. It’s His communication to us. To you. Read it. Meditate on it. Memorize and know it.

  1. Stay Close to God
  2. Avoid Temptation
  3. Clear Your Mind
  4. Enhance Your Life
  5. Be an Example

1) Stay Close to God

Imagine being separated from a loved one for a very long time. You miss every little thing about them, but as time passes it becomes easier to manage without them. You begin to forget. You lose hope. Reading and memorizing scripture is one of the best ways to connect with and maintain a relationship with God.

2) Avoid Temptation

When Jesus was tempted by Satan, He responded by quoting Scripture. Knowing God’s Word gives you a powerful weapon against temptation. It keeps your mind centered on God. It strengthens your hearts in the pursuit of God. In the list of spiritual armor, it’s the only offensive item. It’s your sword. Don’t leave it sheathed on a bookshelf or in your pocket. Keep it in position for the fight.

3) Clear Your Mind

We live in a constant state of stimulation. The internet has made information more available than at any other time in the history of the world. What’s filling your mind? The way you think affects your emotions and the choices you make. Exposing your mind to Scripture repeatedly is a powerful tool in keeping it centered on the mind of Christ, and off the worldly aspirations of strangers online.

4) Enhance Your Life

As you memorize Scripture, the Word of God changes you. You become more like Christ. This has a tremendous impact on your prayer life. You will likely pray more. Scripture memorization naturally lends itself to deeper conversations with Him. You will find yourself leaning on the word to carry you through the day, and may start to notice signs or promptings that bring you peace and joy.

5) Encourage Others

Have you ever helped a friend or family member through a difficult time in their life and wished you had a better way to encourage them? The more you know Scripture, the better equipped you will be to talk to people in their time of need. The Word of God is powerful. It can help you encourage fellow believers in their walk, and allow you to speak the gospel into the life of someone struggling to believe. Scripture memorization equips you to minister to others when they need it the most. What better way to connect with other people?

The Word Came with Power

Memorizing Scripture can seem like a daunting task, especially with everything you have to do each day. Start small, memorizing a verse or 2 at a time. Repeat these verses throughout the day, as a personal mantra. Feel the spirit of God grow stronger as you use scripture to grow closer to Him.
