The end of the world is a hot topic when disasters strike or a century ends. Some can’t help but try to predict again and again the exact day of the end. How do you respond, dear Christian, when you see it on social media or hear it from a friend, coworker, or relative?
Waiting for the End of the World
It seems every generation believes they are the generation who will see the end of the world. When things get bad, that’s where many minds go. It’s easy, however, to lose sight of history when caught up in the daily tasks and happenings of now. In light of the recent hurricanes and earthquakes and the ongoing war against terror, keep the following 5 things in mind.
No one knows the hour.
Countless men and women throughout the years since Jesus’ time on earth have attempted to predict the end of the world. Exactly 0% have gotten it right. Jesus Himself said that no one knows the hour, not even Jesus, but only the Father.
We’ve seen worse.
When catastrophic natural disasters happen, every generation wonders if they’re witnessing the end of the world. It’s predicted at the turn of almost every century (remember Y2k?). The reality of the matter is we’ve seen worse. We’ve seen worse storms and natural disasters. We’ve seen worse wars. Even worse immorality and depravity.
Just the beginning.
In Matthew 24, Jesus talks about wars and rumors of wars, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes. He, in fact, says “see that you are not troubled,” when you see these things. He says these are just the beginning, the birth pangs, but the end is yet to come.
The Rapture could happen anytime.
While the end of the age and the Second Coming of Christ have events that must take place scripturally before they occur, the Rapture could happen at any time. There are no prophetic events left that must take place before God raptures His church out of the world. It could happen with every breath you exhale or every night when you lay down to sleep. It could happen before the end of this sentence you are reading.
How, then, should you live?
God gave us just enough information to know what the end will be like, the signs of it coming, but not when it will come. He also tells us that He could rapture His church at any moment. In any moment this life could be over for all those who believe. And in a flash, you will be with Him. If you believe His Word, how, then, will you live your life now?
