How can we forgive those in our lives that have let us down or disappointed us? It’s important to look to the Bible to teach and guide us so that we can be more understanding and compassionate as Christians. What does the Bible tell us… Share on X

How Can We Face the Challenge of Being a Forgiving Christian?

The Bible tells us that forgiveness is incredibly important to understand and embrace in our Christian walk. There are a number of references on the topic in the Bible, so let’s take a look at some helpful passages:

  1. Isaiah 43:25
  2. Matthew 6:14-15
  3. Luke 6:37
  4. 1 John 1:9
  5. Isaiah 55:7

1) Isaiah 43:25

“I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; and I will not remember your sins.”

Try to remember to first forgive yourself for any guilt you may have. God knows all our sins, but he also does not judge us. He knows that moving forward is the best way to internally heal and accepts that we are human striving to be better Christians every day.

ProTip: When understanding forgiveness in the Bible, take the time to read all the passages in the subject. There are many ways to forgive and accept that will give you a new perspective on others’ actions and help you to move forward in your walk with Christ.

2) Matthew 6:14-15

“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

God is telling us to not judge others but to forgive them for their flaws instead. If we do not do this, we might be judged for our own mistakes in turn. The Lord is forgiving, and we should follow His example.

3) Acts 3:19

“Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.”

It is not only the right thing to forgive, but it is something our minds and souls need to do to cleanse the burden of ill thoughts or resentments we may have towards others. Accepting humanly flaws will contribute to our own journey in Christianity.

4) 1 John 1:9

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Confessing our sins can be difficult, but when we surrender our faults to God this should help relieve some of the guilt we hold on ourselves. Forgiveness does not just apply to the other people in our lives– it also needs to come from within. We should also realize that the mistakes we make ourselves can and will be forgiven by God, and this will help us move forward in our walk with Christ.

5) Isaiah 55:7

“Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon him.”

Sometimes, it’s necessary to let people that have harmed or betrayed you to go about their lives without you as a part of it. The Bible says that this is okay; forgiveness is a necessary tool for personal growth, but if it means keeping trespassers in your life at your own expense, the best idea is to evaluate the relationship you have with that person and assess whether or not it’s best for you to keep them in your life. Prayer will help you reach an honest conclusion if this is a matter that is difficult for you to navigate.

Reaching Out to the Christian Community

Forgiveness is a topic that can be complicated for some. Relationships in themselves are complex and God understands that our walks in life are all different and we need guidance to place ourselves on the right path. The Christian community is there to help you when you have questions or struggles, so do not be afraid to reach out and express the concerns you have that come with forgiving others in your life.
