John 15:7 says, “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” Another translation would say “abide in me” or “abide in the Word.” What does it mean to do that, and how do we implement this in our lives? Let’s take a closer look at this phrase.
To abide in the Word of God means to focus on it, meditate on it, or study the Word. There are many benefits to studying the Bible, but likely the most important one is growing closer to Christ. There are many ways to meaningfully engage with the Word, some of which are to join a Bible study group or set time aside each day to meditate on the Word.

To abide by something means to accept, or act in accordance with, like a rule or a decision. But this definition does not quite encapsulate all of what the Bible asks of us. In other scriptures, we are called to think about the Bible in several different ways. James says “look into” (James 1:25), Paul says “dwell” in Colossians (Colossians 3:16), Jeremiah says “see” (Jeremiah 2:31), and there are many more ways we are supposed to study.
Benefits of Studying the Bible
So, while we are meant to “abide” by or “obey” the Word, we are meant to do more than that. Christians need to study the Bible so we can know our history, culture, and moral code. Knowing the scriptures is also important because it allows us to be reminded of how we are meant to live when we are faced with difficult situations. In Psalms 119:11, the writer says “I have hidden Your word in my heart, So that I may not sin against you.” As modern Christians, we should do the same.
Ways to Engage in the Bible
There are many ways to engage in the Bible in productive ways. You can join a Bible study to learn more about a specific topic or book. You can study the Bible on your own, and you can attend sermons regularly. The main point is to study the Word, and you will walk closer to Christ.
