As Christians, we hear all of the time how important forgiveness is. But what is forgiveness, and how do we practice it in our daily lives? Does it help others? Let’s dive more into the concept of forgiveness in the following blog post.
Forgiveness is essential for our spiritual, emotional, and mental health. It is what allows us to show the world God’s grace every day. Jesus spoke on forgiveness many times throughout his ministry. Let’s go over what the Bible says about forgiveness.
What does forgiveness in the Bible look like, and how do we forgive? Let’s unpack that in the following blog post. Click To TweetWhat is Forgiveness?
Forgiveness is making a conscious decision to let go of feelings of hurt and injustices. It is almost like when a debt is absolved. Instead of keeping a record of the wrongs, forgiveness allows you to wipe the slate clean. That is easier said than done, but we need to do it.
What Does Jesus Christ Say About Forgiveness?
One of the most important things Jesus said about forgiveness is how many times we are to forgive someone. Matthew 18:21-22 where he says, “Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.”
Later in the passage, He tells a parable about a man who is in debt to his master. That master was kind enough to forgive the debt the servant had accumulated. Then that servant went to a friend and refused to forgive that debt. When the master heard about it, he was angry and threw him in jail until he could pay the debt he owed.
How Do We Practice Forgiveness?
The best thing we can do to maintain our relationships is to forgive. But how do we do that? Well, there isn’t a blueprint of forgiveness. One of the best ways to forgive is to pray that God allows you to see it from their perspective. That way, it is easier to forgive someone when you understand them.
Act Like Jesus
We are meant to forgive others just as our Heavenly Father forgave us for our sins. That is how we show others God’s grace and His love.
